WASHINGTON, DC., (WUSA) -- At the Eleanor Ford Reading Center in Prince George's County, putting words together is like taking a final victory lap around a track.

"You guys are doing really great with your reading," says Robin Bruce, the director of the center.

...more center operates thanks to dozens of books from a literacy organization called Reading Tree.

"This pushes the skills over the top, having these books for them to read," says Bruce.

Some of those books come from blue bins, like the ones you see in this Virginia parking lot.

They are marked with words like "books for charity" and "donate books, CD's and DVDs."

"Because I'm a Friends of the Library volunteer, I suppose you could say I'm extra sensitive to the appearance of this box," says Pamela Chin.

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County police have charged a Chevy Chase, Md. man for a New Year's Day robbery at a Denny's Restaurant.

Colin Thomas Bowie was charged with robbery, abduction, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and impersonating a police officer.

According to Fairfax City Police, Takoma Park Police arrested Bowie on Feb. 17, charging him as a fugitive from justice from Virginia. He is being held in Montgomery County, Md.

In the Denny's robbery, authorities say a man entered the restaurant at 10473 Fairfax Boulevard at approximately 6:30 a.m. claiming to be a police officer. Then, the man took out a handgun and ordered the manager into the office to get money from the safe. The manager handed the man the money and the man fled out the back door.

No one was injured in the incident.

RICHMOND, Va. (WUSA) -- Richmond police charged a man from Springfield with driving under the influence in connection with a fatal crash Wednesday morning.

Varinder Chahal has been charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a blood or breath test and felony
...more manslaughter, according to police.

Police say at approximately 12:37 a.m. Wednesday, an officer saw a crash at the intersection of 2nd and Canal streets. A crash team later determined that 23-year-old Varinder Chahal of Springfield ran a red light in his 2004 Mazda 6 while traveling westbound on Canal Street. His car then t-boned a 2007 Toyota Yaris headed northbound on 2nd Street. The Yaris spun around and struck a building.

According to police, 19-year-old Carolina Perez of Virginia Beach, who was in the back seat of the Yaris was taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. She died a few hours later.

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County Crime Solvers want your help identifying the suspects who broke out windows of a mosque under construction and caused an estimated $170,000 to $200,000 worth of damage.

...more was secured by the construction company on Jan. 29 around 4:30 p.m., say police. An employee from the company called police the next day when he discovered damage that morning.

Detectives found alcoholic beverage bottles underneath a construction tarp and determined some bottles were used to break out the windows, along with large concrete blocks and wooden planks.

Police say it does not appear the suspect of suspects entered the building itself.

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA) -- Firefighters responded to a townhouse at Galesbury Lane and Beaujolais Court in Chantilly after the report of a possible carbon monoxide incident.

The incident was first reported at about 7:10 a.m. Wednesday.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - More than a dozen Virginia localities are receiving state grants to encourage students to walk or ride bicycles to schools.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Wednesday that 16 municipalities and two counties will receive a total $5.9 million in Safe Routes to School
...more funding.

The funding will be used for projects at 28 elementary and middle schools, including pedestrian and bicycle crossings and multi-use trails.

The goal is to improve the safety of bicycling and walking to school and to make these activities convenient and appealing for students.

Municipalities receiving funding are Alexandria, Ashland, Blacksburg, Chincoteague, Colonial Beach, Colonial Heights, Falls Church, Galax, Lynchburg, Manassas Park, Roanoke, Stanley, Staunton, Vienna, Waynesboro and West Point.

Fairfax and Faquier counties also will receive funding.

(WUSA) -- Metro and Fairfax County want your help picking names for some of its new stations.

The Silver Line will be Metro's newest line. It will go from East Falls Church, through Tysons Corner, through Reston and Herndon, to Dulles Airport and into Ashburn.  The first part of the
...more Silver Line, to Wiehle Avenue, is set to open in 2013.  The extension to Dulles should open in 2017.

 

Metro and Fairfax County want your help in picking the names for some of the new stations. You can voice your opinion in an on-line survey.

One example: the station on Route 123, just east of the Beltway, by the Capital One headquarters. Which name do you like: McLean, Scotts Run, McLean-Scotts Run, or Tysons-McLean? Fairfax County likes Tysons McLean the best.
You can take this survey on line by clicking HERE. Neither Metro nor Fairfax County says the survey is binding, but it would like to know your opinions.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County Police have made two arrests in an eyewear thefts case thanks to tips submitted through Crime Solvers. A warrant is out for a third suspect.

Fairfax County detectives charged 52-year-old Arthina Cecilia Leake-Hall of Washington, D.C. and
...more 42-year-old Norlin Keith Washington of Accokeek, Md. in relation to four eyewear thefts in the county which took place in July and November of last year.

Leake-Hall was charged with two counts of grand larceny and two counts of larceny with the intent to sell, say police. 

Washington was charged with three counts of grand larceny and three counts of larceny with the intent to sell.

Police are still looking for 53-year-old Robert Wilson. He has two outstanding warrants for grand larceny and two warrants for larceny with the intent to sell. Wilson is described as a black male, 5 feet 5 inches tall and about 130 pounds. He goes by the nicknames of "Link" or "Linky,"

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) - An Alexandria man has pleaded guilty to four separate fraud schemes, including one where he admitted using credit cards in the names of his elderly grandmother and grandfather, and his daughter's Social Security number. 

Fifty-year-old David Lee Parker
...more admitted to six charges for conducting the four fraudulent schemes since 2006. The counts included:

one count of access device fraud,
two counts of wire fraud,
two counts of aggravated identity theft, and
one count of fraud in connection with computers.

In one scheme, Parker used credit cards in the names of his elderly grandmother and grandfather, his own name and his daughter's Social Security number make more than $70,000 worth of unauthorized purchases.

In another scheme, Parker convinced two people to invest in the European franchise rights to the Hard Times Cafe and the investors lost more than $120,000.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- Alexandria Police continue to investigate a burglary and assault from Monday night.

Police say a 16-year-old babysitter heard a loud noise at approximately 8 p.m. at the home in the 1100 block of Archer Court. When she went to investigate, she saw a man who
...more grabbed her and pushed her to the floor. Her cell phone rang and he fled the residence.

The babysitter was not seriously injured, say police.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early twenties, 6'0 to 6'2" tall, weighing approximately 190 to 200 pounds with black hair and a goatee.

MCLEAN, Va. (WUSA) -- In honor of Langley head coach Travis Hess, the Saxon players all wore neon shoe laces. The parents in the stands donned neon ribbons in support of the sixth year head coach.

In the Langley community, the game of basketball has been an escape from the scary
...more reality of life itself. Coach Hess' one-year-old daughter Gianna was recently diagnosed with cancer, numbing the school with sorrow.

"Coach Hess has built a fantastic program and we're doing everything the way he's taught us," said interim head coach Scott Newman. "It's so hard for him and his family. Our heads and our hearts are with them."

Given the circumstances, Langley should've fallen to South County Monday night in the opening round of the regional tournament. The excuses were there for the taking. Instead, the Saxons played inspired second half defense on their way to a 60-46 victory.

BAILEYS CROSSROADS, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County Fire authorities say Red Cross is helping two residents who have been displaced because of an apartment fire this past weekend.

A fire broke out on Saturday at approximately 7:50 p.m. at their three-story apartment building in the 3400
...more block of Carlin Springs Road.

Firefighters reported light smoke coming from the front of a second floor apartment and battled the fire in a bedroom closet in the second floor apartment. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 40 minutes.

Fire officials say there was  moderate damage to that apartment but surrounding apartments only received minor water and smoke damage. Damage is estimated at $75,000, according to officials.

Residents were warned about the fire by fire alarms. There were no injuries.

The fire is under investigation.
