Bike to Work Day: May 18

On Friday, May 18, Greater Springfield area commuters have a great opportunity to ditch the traffic and congestion that they experience in their cars and ride their bikes to work on Bike to Work Day (BTWD), sponsored by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclists Association. It’s...more a great chance to get some fresh air, enjoy the network of bike trails in the area, meet fellow bicyclists, and make a difference reducing road congestion and air pollution, even if it is just for one day.
Starting at 6:30 a.m., area bicyclists can gather at one of two local BTWD pit stops. The Burke Pit Stop will be hosted at the Burke VRE Station near the train platform. The Springfield/Metro Park Pit Stop is located at the gazebo on Walker Lane. At each pit stop, bicyclists who are on their way to work will find health-conscious refreshments and giveaways, friendly smiles, and lots of encouragement.

Greenspring Residents Honored for Their Dedication During National Physical Fitness & Sports Month

Greenspring retirement community has planned several activities for National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in May including a yoga alignment clinic and a nature walk near Accotink Creek, which runs adjacent to Greenspring’s campus.  Greenspring residents are known stewards of campaigns...more promoting a healthier lifestyle, as is evident through their partnership with the National Institute on Aging’s Go4Life® campaign.  Greenspring held the first ever Go4Life® campaign event at the campus in Springfield in November 2011. 

Throughout the month of May, Greenspring will continue celebrating those residents who have shown a dedication and commitment to living a healthier lifestyle.  On Wednesday, May 9, the community held an awards ceremony honoring new inductees into the Greenspring Fitness Center's Hall of Fame.  Residents honored were those who have logged 500, 1000, and 2000 visits to the on-campus fitness center.    

To date, 194 residents have been inducted

100 People to Win Free Year’s Supply of Chick-fil-A in Va.

Residents are lining the streets in Springfield, Va., as Chick-fil-A opens their newest restaurant, which is located at 6681 Backlick Road. 
To celebrate, Chick-fil-A will be giving away a FREE year’s supply of Chick-fil-A to the first 100 adults in line.
Since 2003, the chain...more restaurant has given away more than $16 million in free food at almost 600 grand openings.
No tents are permitted, but campers are allowed to bring open-sided canopies if they agree to share with others outside of their party.
The line officially opened at 6 a.m. on Wednesday in Springfield.
The free meal cards will be awarded to the lucky 100 on Thursday between 6 a.m. and 6:10 a.m.
The restaurant officially opens for business shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 26.

'Racing Presidents' Celebrate Opening Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -  The Washington Nationals' popular  Racing Presidents got a jump on Opening Day, celebrating at the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield on Wednesday.

Three of the presidents, Tom, Teddy and George, spent time with residents and friends at the...more community, took part in a signature race, and posed for photos--giving Greenspring residents bragging rights about posing with true icons of American history.

Residents also had a chance to win four tickets for the Nationals Opening Day game with the Reds.

Jessica McKay contibuted to this report: Yesterday, Wednesday, April 11, three of the renowned Washington Nationals Racing Presidents (Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and George Washington) celebrated opening day at Nationals Park with residents and their guests at Greenspring retirement...more community in Springfield, Va..  The Presidents took photos with residents and their guests; some lucky guests even won four opening day tickets.
Tom, Teddy, and George also had their final warmup for their "signature race" at the event.  
Take a look at video above to see who won.  Don't hold your breath though, it wasn't Teddy.

Lake Braddock Baseball Trounces Rival West Springfield 11-1

BURKE, Va. (WUSA) -- There is a calm, business-like demeanor to the Lake Braddock Bruins (6-0) baseball team. After clobbering their previously undefeated rival West Springfield, 11-1, on Tuesday, there was little to no celebrating from the Bruins as they cleaned up their baseball...more field.

"A win is a win and we are just trying to keep moving forward," said left fielder Dylan O'Connor.

With a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning, it was O'Connor's bat that busted things wide open in favor of the Bruins. Because Lake Braddock had two runners in scoring position, the senior admitted he was choking up on the baseball bat, just hoping to put a ball in play. Instead, O'Connor mashed a line drive home run over the left field fence, giving the home team a commanding 5-1 lead.

"Fortunately their pitcher left a curve ball high in the zone and I was able to hit it hard," said O'Connor, a senior.

Woman Sexually Assaulted In Wooded Area

BURKE, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County Police are looking for a man who dragged a woman into the woods and sexually assaulted her on Wednesday night.

According to police, a woman was walking in the 9700 block of Commonwealth Blvd near a wooded area on Wednesday at approximately 10 p.m....more when she was grabbed from behind and dragged into the woods. 

Police say a man threatened her with a knife "or edged weapon" and sexually assaulted her. Then, the man was startled by a noise and fled.

The woman was then able to call for help.

Police say the man is described as white, about 5'7" tall and wearing a sweatshirt. According to police, his face was partially concealed during the attack.
