PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (WUSA) -- More than 3,000 applications were received for just 50 jobs in the Prince George's County Fire Department, fire officials said. 

The starting salary for the positions available is $40,848, with a 20-year retirement and opportunity for shift work,
...more Mark Brady, Prince George's County spokesperson said in a news release. 

The department only took applications from April 6 to April 20, and all applications had to be submitted online, according to Brady. 
"Perhaps the popularity is a result of the economy and the difficulty in finding work or it could be the compensation and benefits and/or the prestige and honor that come with the position of being a Prince George's County Firefighter/Medic," Brady said. 

Out of the 3,000 applications submitted, 2,300 met the requirements to take the May 16 writing portion of the test to get hired for the positions.

PALMER PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- For some kids, having a police officer for a parent is probably intimidating. But for three young women in Prince George's County, it was inspiring.

LaVonne Dickerson was just three years old when her mother graduated from the Prince George's County

"It really influenced me growing up," said Dickerson. "I was like, 'Wow! She's doing that? I want to do that.' "

Twenty years later, Dickerson did just that. In fact, her mother, now Corporal Loretta Williams, pinned her badge on Graduation Day last May. The two became the first African-American, mother-daughter duo in Prince George's County Police History.

"I'm still surprised that she's a police officer, but I'm very proud," said Cpl. Williams.

The Dickerson-Williams mother-daughter team is one of three in the Prince George's County Police Department. They don't normally work together day-to-day. Department policy separates family

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County police say a man was killed in a motorcycle crash that was partly caused by a collision with a buzzard.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland tells The Washington Post that the incident occurred about 3 p.m. Sunday on Brown Station Road, near Brooke
...more Lane, in Upper Marlboro. Copeland says the man struck a "low flying buzzard" after passing a vehicle on the right shoulder.

He says the impact caused the man to lose control of his motorcycle, and run into a curb, fire hydrant and utility pole.

Copeland says the man, 31-year-old David Christopher Norris, was pronounced dead at a hospital. He says investigators believe that speeding, in addition to the collision with the buzzard, caused the crash.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- A man accused of shooting another man in the face in Upper Marlboro after a verbal altercation has been arrested, says authorities with the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office.

Thomas Livingston Moore allegedly shot the man in the face on April 25.
...more After speaking to his attorney, deputies were able to get Moore to surrender. Moore was turned himself in at the Prince George's County Detention Center and was taken into custody.

Moore is being held without bond at the Department of Corrections. He is charged with attempted first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, use of a firearm in a violent crime and illegally carrying a handgun on person.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -  Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks announced Monday that Billy Joe Simon has been convicted of first degree murder in the 2001 death of Michael Anthony Neal. Simon's DNA had been obtained after he was convicted of a crime in
...more Washington, D.C. in 2011, and matched to the Neal cold case.

On June 10, 2001 around 5 a.m., the victim, Michael Anthony Neal, was shot multiple times and died after two men wearing masks broke into his three story townhouse. Neal had been lying in bed with his fiancee. Their month-old son was in a bassinet next to the bed when Neal was shot and killed. Their 12-year old daughter, in her bedroom on the first level, was unharmed.

The men took a large amount of cash the victim had hidden in the house and fled. The defendant, Billy Joe Simon, was a partner of Neal's in the drug trade. Police later determined that he had left several small blood smears on the walls of the home's

Potential adoptees will be matched with pets and fees for adoption will be reduced. Pet adoption fees for Spring Fest only will be $45 for cats (normally at $150) and $100 for dogs (normally $200).

There will be a pet fashion show and parade and a bake, craft and yard sale. 

All proceeds benefit the Animal Services Facility.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- All lanes of southbound Route 4 have been reopened at Route 301 after a violent wrong-way crash injured three people in Upper Marlboro early Thursday morning.

...more southbound lanes of Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue collided with a work van and a GMC pick-up truck at Route 301/Crain Highway around 5:50 Thursday morning. 

Mark Brady, spokesman for Prince George's County Fire and Rescue, says two of the three injured men were trapped inside vehicles when rescuers arrived on scene.  A passenger inside the pick-up suffered critical injuries and was flown by MSP Trooper 2 to Prince George's Hospital.  A second victim was taken by ambulance to the same hospital.  The third man, one of the drivers involved in the crash, suffered only minor injuries. 

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
