WALDORF, Md. (WUSA) - A child who followed his mother out of her car stepped into the path of an SUV and was killed Tuesday, according to Charles County Sheriff's Office.

According to witnesses, the child's mother had pulled over on the street and got out of the car to hand a letter to a mailman who was standing nearby, police said.  She did not realize that her son also got out of the car.

He had been strapped into a properly installed child car seat in the back seat of the car but managed to release his seat belt and quickly get out of the car, police said. He went behind his mother's vehicle and into the road where he was struck by an oncoming SUV.

Emergency personnel arrived to work on the child but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

WALDORF, Md. (WUSA) -- A Waldorf man is charged with theft after allegedly stealing spare tires from vehicles at a commuter parking lot and breaking into vending machines.

Charles County Sheriff's Office authorities say 39-year-old Scott Christopher Beal was arrested after an officer
...more spotted "a suspicious Ford F-150" in the parking lot of the Smallwood Park and Ride on Tuesday. According to authorities, Beal drove out of the parking lot when he saw the officer, hit another car and kept driving. The officer then stopped the truck.

Authorities say the officer found that Beal had crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia as well as a tire in the bed of his truck.

A check showed that the tire was stole from car parked at the Park and Ride, according to authorities.

Further investigation revealed that Beal stole several spare tires from the Mattawoman Park and Ride last week, and he was also connected to thefts from vending machines at area car washes

According to authorities, the man started breaking into vending machines in mid-February. they say he broke into vending machines at:

the Extreme Car Wash in La Plata
Age to Age Auto in Hughesville

Extreme Car Wash in Waldorf
and the CITGO Gas Station in Glasva.

Most of the thefts happened during  the overnight hours, say police.

HUGHESVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- Southern Maryland Food Bank has closed its doors temporarily "due to a severe shortage in food donations," according to Charles County government officials.

County officials urge residents to donate food as soon as possible so that the food bank can
...more reopen. If the minimum amount of food donations are met, the food bank is slated to reopen on March 19. According to officials, the food bank needs at least 15,000 to 18,000 pounds of food a week to stay open.

WALDORF, Md. (WUSA) -- A Charlotte Hall man is accused of nine tire and rim thefts that occurred between March and January in Waldorf.

Twenty-five-year-old Rodney Peter Quarles, Jr. was arrested following a rim theft and police pursuit in January. According to sheriff's office
...more authorities, an officer with the Charles County Sheriff's Office was patrolling Bensville Road on Jan. 31 at approximately 2:40 a.m. when he spotted  a Chevy Tahoe and a red car parked at Bensville Park, which was closed. He tried to stop the vehicles, but both took off in different directions.

The officer lost sight of the passenger car but followed the Tahoe onto Route 228 toward Prince George's County. Other officers joined the pursuit and stop sticks were deployed, say sheriff's office authorities. The Tahoe hit the stop sticks, and went into a ditch, say authorities. Quarles, the driver, tried to flee on foot but was caught.

He was arrested for fleeing and eluding police.

WALDORF, Md. (WUSA) -- A D.C. man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after an incident in Charles County.

According the Charles County Sheriff's Office, an officer was patrolling near the intersection of Route 5 and Billingsley Road in Waldorf on Feb. 8 at
...more 8:53 a.m. after receiving complaints about the commercial vehicles in the area. The officer saw a 2002 International Dump Truck with a registration violation and conducted a traffic stop. According to authorities, the officer smelled alcohol when he approached the driver.

Authorities say further investigation revealed that 53-year-old Joseph Clark Mims of Washington, D.C., was intoxicated. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and other commercial vehicle violations.
