WALDORF, Md. (WUSA) - A child who followed his mother out of her car stepped into the path of an SUV and was killed Tuesday, according to Charles County Sheriff's Office.
Elias Masanaa Charles-Kabongo, 3, was hit by a sport utility vehicle at about 2 p.m. in the 10500 block of...more Sugarberry Street in Waldorf.
According to witnesses, the child's mother had pulled over on the street and got out of the car to hand a letter to a mailman who was standing nearby, police said. She did not realize that her son also got out of the car.
He had been strapped into a properly installed child car seat in the back seat of the car but managed to release his seat belt and quickly get out of the car, police said. He went behind his mother's vehicle and into the road where he was struck by an oncoming SUV.
Emergency personnel arrived to work on the child but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the SUV, 48, remained on the scene. At this
